Why Bother with Collective Mentality?
Why Bother with Collective Mentality?
Although many philosophers and cognitive science are doctrinally hostile to the possibility of collective mentality, claims about 'group minds' have played a prominent role in the history of philosophy and psychology. This chapter presents a series of ten cases where it has seemed plausible to posit collective mentality; these cases are used to motivate an initial sketch of the argument for a macrocognitive approach to collective mentality. A brief sketch of the books structure is also provided.
