Rodgers and Hart’s first big break came from a junior wing of the Theatre Guild producing the Garrick Gaieties (1925). This offered the boys a chance to try writing for revue. This chapter considers three early revues, two installments of the Garrick Gaieties (1925 and 1926) and Billy Rose’s Fifth Avenue Follies (1926). In these shows they exercised their craft of songwriting and developed characteristic traits through songs like “Manhattan” and “Mountain Greenery;” but they also toyed with comic ideas to which they would later return, and extended mini-operetta sequences like the pastiche “Rose of Arizona,” whose intertextual borrowings show an impressive knowledge of Broadway repertoire. In extending their craft they moved toward their intention of creating a complete book musical for Broadway.
