Traditions and Legacies of Rebellion
Traditions and Legacies of Rebellion
This chapter briefly outlines two centuries of popular rebellions and revolutions in Guerrero in order to ground the 1970s guerrilla insurgencies in a longer political history of regional peasant agency and to highlight the deep, multilayered political imaginaries that underscored the peasant guerrillas. The chapter argues that the ACNR and the PDLP both emerged from an immediate historical context characterized by global revolutionary upheaval and localized state terror, and from a longer duration filled with unredeemed peasant demands, continuous grievances, and subversive politics. The chapter pays special attention to the demands and desires of peasants who were militarily defeated but who politically persistent.
