(p.135) Chapter 12 Repressed Memory Inducement Cases
The Clergy Sex Abuse Crisis and the Legal Responses

Delays in reporting abuse resulted in limitation laws blocking some suits and prosecutions. Abuse victims claim delays resulted from psychological trauma that led to repression of the memory of the sex crime, which is recalled only when the victims become adults, which may be many years after the alleged event. Deep conflicts persist about the fairness of limitations on claims made on older abuse events. This is because many question the credibility of repressed memories or are concerned that even if the memories are valid, extension of limitations to include these claims raises all the issues that limitations periods are meant to resolve, such as missing evidence, lost memories and witnesses, etc.
