The U.S. Catholic Church suffered a major economic disaster with a total cost of around $3 billion with numerous program cuts and losses, including numerous dioceses having to file bankruptcy. In addition to payouts on settlements and judgments, the Church found its insurance premiums going up. This is coupled by the bad publicity putting a damper on fund-raising efforts and oather donor adverse effects as potential donors balk at having their money go toward paying claims against sexually abusive priests rather than educational or other charitable purposes. This is particularly true when the claims being settled may have nothing to do with the parish in which the donor resides.

Keywords:   bankruptcy, fund-raising, insurance, parish assets, donor adverse effects
