Within the Catholic Church, some religious groups (Jesuit, Holy Cross, Dominicans, Franciscans) have special status. Several had major sex abuse scandal payments and publicity. Unwinding their issues requires understanding their special roles and methods. The chapter describes in detail the differences between those who live within religious communities and those who function within a diocese, including the bishop‘s authority over members of religious communities. It sets forth how the Norms affect these religious, and attributes the lower rate of sexual abuse claims against the religious to the benefits of a supportive community. It also covers transfers within religious houses and the issue of non-clerical members.
