Clergy Abuse Issues in Non-Roman Catholic Denominations

Clergy Abuse Issues in Non-Roman Catholic Denominations

(p.405) Chapter 29 Clergy Abuse Issues in Non-Roman Catholic Denominations
The Clergy Sex Abuse Crisis and the Legal Responses

James T. O’Reilly

Margaret S. P. Chalmers

Oxford University Press

Non-Catholic clergy abuse of minors is a well-documented phenomenon in the United States and elsewhere. The difference is in the tight central setting of Vatican policy and strong autonomy of the Catholic bishop to control clergy as contrasted to other denominations. This increases scrutiny of Catholic violators and their discipline and transfer differences. The chapter provides an overview of the problem as reflected in the situation of other denominations and how those congregations have responded, including those of the Episcopal, Jewish, Mormon, Nazarene, Methodist, and other Protestant faiths. It also describes particular cases, including ones that have raised constitutional questions.
