The Language of Bribery Cases

Roger W. Shuy

Oxford University Press

This chapter reviews the crucial legal elements of bribery as they relate to the twelve cases: offering, soliciting, accepting, having knowledge of, intentionality, predisposition, and government inducements. The chapter then compares the bribery cases of the 1980s with those of more recent times in terms of the resulting injuries and tainted reputations of innocent suspects and unrelated bystanders that were created by middlemen, informants, cooperating witnesses, government agents, as well as by entire law enforcement operations that create the appearance of a guilt that turns out to be unjustified.

Keywords:   offering, soliciting, accepting, knowledge, intention, predisposition, government inducement, injuries caused by operations
