Relabeling and the Contribution of the Superstrate Languages to Creoles
The aim of this chapter is to identify the domains in which the superstrate languages contribute to creoles. It is assumed that, like the contribution of the substrate languages, the superstrate languages’ contribution to creoles is principled. The methodology developed to accurately identify the contribution of the superstrate languages consists in comparing creoles that share the same substrate languages but have different superstrate languages. By hypothesis, the bulk of the similarities between these creoles should be attributable to their shared substrate, whereas most differences between them should be attributable to their different superstrate languages, thus revealing the contribution of the latter. This contribution will be shown to be concentrated in the labels and word order, which could be referred to as the “form” as opposed to the “meaning” and “function.”
