This chapter examines the limits of sampling as a means of transcultural and cross-class expression suggested by the “Bed Intruder Song,” which was among the first viral hits to break out of Internet circulation and onto the Billboard charts. The song was a breakthrough for comedic, all-white Brooklyn-based Auto-Tune the News producers the Gregory Brothers. However, it was a far less substantial coup for Antoine Dodson, the young Southern African American man whose reaction to a rapist’s attempted assault on his sister in the housing projects became the song’s principal material. The success of the tune, the stir it caused, and the discourses that accompanied it call attention to how existing racial and economic structures are reproduced via new technologies and production practices, which on the surface promote social change.
