In the case of the Mexican Institute of Sound (IMS), a musical project led by Camilo Lara, sampling has resulted in a series of recordings with challenging views of national identity’s relationship to modernity. In 2006, IMS debuted with México Máxico, eventually evolving—through Piñata (2007), Soy Sauce (2009), and Suave Patria (2010)—into Polìtico (2012), an album critical of the country’s current situation, with a state plagued by corruption and drug kingpins infringing the law left and right. This chapter discusses IMS’s evolution and argues for a particular reading of Mexico’s situation through its recordings. In plain terms, Mexico’s context is so dire that, when cultural actors engage its political and social reality hoping to put forward criticism, they end up commodifying the drug trade as a form of mexicanidad that manages to empower its inhabitants, allowing them the opportunity for a controversial profile within the international community.
