A multidimensional perspective of prosocial behavior amongst college students that examines different types of prosocial behavior as linked to a set of conceptually relevant variables is necessary to fully understand their prosocial behavior. Additionally, the role of gender is not well understood. This chapter first provides an overview of a number of prosocial behavior correlates. Second, the results of a study with college students are shared to highlight the benefits of adopting a multidimensional view of prosocial behavior among college students, as well as the necessity of examining the role of gender. Links between six subtypes of prosocial behavior and global measure of prosocial behavior with several cognitive, emotional, relationship, and problem behavior variables are examined. Lastly, the lessons learned from this study about the importance of a multidimensional perspective on college student prosocial behavior and of considering gender are described, and future directions are discussed.
