This chapter focuses on portrayals of and effects of viewing prosocial behavior in the media. Such behavior is examined using a multidimensional approach, focusing on different contexts, targets, and motivations. A developmental approach is also provided when examining media effects. Though there is little research on prosocial behavior in the media, the research reviewed here suggests that prosocial behavior is common in the media and viewing is associated with positive outcomes for children, adolescents, emerging adults, and adults. Future research is discussed, focusing on how to examine this construct in the media in a multidimensional fashion.
