Oxford University Press

The primary purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of the literature related to early literacy development and deaf learners, in order to establish a sense of the field to date. This overview also allows for consideration of the findings of this research in order to make recommendations for future inquiries. The knowledge of extant studies gained from this literature review also affords the opportunity to reflect on gaps in the literature and offer specific suggestions for topics requiring further investigation. Finally, the information presented throughout this chapter serves as a reference point for discussions in subsequent sections of the book, exploring implications for research and practice in the areas of reading, writing, bilingualism, and assessment.
