Empathy and Morality

Heidi L. Maibom

Oxford University Press

This chapter situates the debate that the chapters in this volume engage in. It discusses the most researched empathy-related emotions—empathy, sympathy, emotional contagion, and personal distress—and related cognitive phenomena, such as perspective taking. It gives a broad introduction to distinctions within empathy-related emotions, their behavioral effects, their evolution and development, their measurement, their eliciting conditions, individual differences in the experiencing of such emotions, theories of how they are related to morality, and skepticisms about their moral importance.

Keywords:   cognitive empathy, affective empathy, sympathy, emotional contagion, personal distress
