This brief coda sets out the book's main argument: that some black American thinkers offer insights into the theory and practice of democracy around which to build a new and more effective public philosophy for the twenty-first century. The author urges his colleagues in literary studies to reinvest in vision along with critique, and to recall that it is not just the unconscious that is political but the imagination.
