Dangerous Rhythm

Richard Barrios

Oxford University Press

This Introduction provides an overview of the musical film’s odd, paradoxical and often digressory march through history. It comes into fashion, then suddenly becomes irrelevant, being both lauded and derided, loved and deplored. And, as with the 2002 film Chicago, it can return in triumph (temporarily). It provides a statement of the book’s purpose—to examine the musical not through its chronology but through its various aspects. From the greatness of a Singin’ in the Rain to the cosmic wrongness of a Paint Your Wagon, the musical has endured a relationship with its audiences that is singular, often troubled and sometimes satisfactory. Through the musical’s components this book will draw lessons from its past, reflect on its present, and speculate on the future.

Keywords:   musical films, Academy Awards, Chicago (2002 film)
