They focus on the development of civic capacity and show how diverse classrooms can enhance students’ preparation for democratic deliberation. They explain as well how the quality of our society is shaped by decisions about who attends school with whomand how we distribute learning opportunities across different students and schools.The opportunity gap, they conclude, arises when public education in the United States is not fulfilling its promise of ensuring equal educational opportunities for all students, and this severelyundermines the health and survival of our democracy.
