Overdiagnosis and Overtreatment

Implications for Bedside Rationing

(p.204) 11 Overdiagnosis and Overtreatment
Fair Resource Allocation and Rationing at the Bedside

Howard Brody

Oxford University Press

This chapter argues that overdiagnosis and overtreatment account for such a large part of health care expenditures that physician attention to reducing such overuse might in and of itself provide a sufficient solution to the problem of unsustainable health care costs. Part and parcel of this view is the idea that the common assumption that there is a continuum of more and less efficient medical interventions is not accurate or useful. Rather, parsing out the ineffective from effective interventions and eliminating the former would suffice.
