This chapter reports on the response of human factors and ergonomics to the threats posed by global climate and ecosystem changes from human interventions. After addressing the three theoretical approaches of Human Factors for Sustainable Development (Steimle & Zink, 2006), Green Ergonomics (Thatcher, 2013), and Ergoecology (Garcia-Acosta et al., 2012a), a review of the empirical work appearing in the human factors and ergonomics literature is given including issues of organizational sustainability, the design of sustainable work systems, designing jobs and tasks to enhance a sustainability agenda, social sustainability, and the design of products and services to support sustainability. The chapter concludes with a critique of these approaches in contributing to the “greening” of organizations, such as disagreements over using the word green and the relevance of this work for organizational functioning.
