Affective Publics
Affective Publics
This chapter draws together the findings of Chapters 2, 3, and 4 to define affective publics as publics that actualize by feeling their way into politics through media. Affective publics can reflexively drive a movement or issue or get entrapped in a loop of sustained affective engagement. Their impact is symbolic, liminal, and semantic. It is through semantic means that they seek to define the personal as political and thus lay claim to agency. These publics materialize discursively on Twitter but also through a variety of digital platforms that support expression and connection.
