Patching the Vocal Garment

Patching the Vocal Garment

22 Patching the Vocal Garment
On the Art of Singing

Richard Miller

Oxford University Press

This chapter argues that patching is seldom an effective way of ensuring either the beauty or the longevity of a garment with holes. In the same way, a voice teacher should not resort to patching fundamental errors of vocalism with compensatory threads of colorful imagery. No amount of attention to the concerns of audience communication, dramatic interpretation, linguistic exactitude, and artistry and musicianship can mask the faulty weave in the vocal instrument, any more than the addition of red and yellow ribbons can disguise a threadbare coat. A sagacious vocal tailor—that is, the teacher of singing—will make sure that the correct weave serves as the singer's foundation at any level of development, or within any allotted span of time.
