This chapter considers questions that arise when singing for the first time for another voice teacher. Will, once again, everything learned in the past be wrong? Will the new teacher insist on starting from the beginning, on building from the ground up? Surely there is no other performance discipline in which such diametrically opposed techniques may face the student who changes teachers. The experienced singer, who for some reason seeks out a new pair of listening ears, may encounter a completely different set of aesthetic and pedagogical ideals, and have to sort them out in the light of past experiences and logical thinking. The beginning voice student, on the other hand, has little reason to question suggestions and criticism from a teacher. The new teacher is not always sufficiently aware of what it means to a singer to put his/her future into new hands. The first audition lesson is a special occasion for both teacher and singer.
