This chapter considers how the voice teacher may help his/her students develop independence. Because of the highly personal nature of the art of singing, the rapport between the teacher and the voice student is one that exceeds that of most teacher–student relationships. This condition can produce gratifying personal and professional rewards, but it also may tend to encourage an undesirable dependency of the student on the voice teacher. Ethical problems aside, building such dependency represents incomplete vocal pedagogy. It is not the teacher's privilege to treat the talented singer as a piece of marble to be sculpted and displayed as the product of his or her own creation. The test of a successful pedagogy should be the ability to provide the learning tools with which the singer constructs his or her own art.
