This chapter argues that the voice teacher should read the literature to gain more knowledge. Within the past decade, vocal investigation has produced considerable literature as to how the voice functions. This expanding knowledge is available to persons who deal professionally with the voice. No longer does the teacher of singing have to guess how the vocal folds respond to airflow, what breathy or pressed phonations look like at the level of the larynx or as measured by instrumentation, what the contributing sources of resonance may be, how vowel tracking relates to vocal timbre, the causes of nasality, and what factors produce the “ring” of the voice. The vocal research literature is there to be read, and it is as important to vocal pedagogy as are comparable literatures to other fields. There is an attempt at times to divide the voice teaching profession into “scientific” teachers and “empirical” teachers. This is a false dichotomy, because the singer uses a physical instrument in an empirical way.
