This chapter considers how “scientific information” is misused in the teaching of singing. Certain singing techniques produce results in direct opposition to normal modes of physiological behavior, even to the extent of inducing vocal pathologies. Then the rest of the vocal pedagogy community has to try “recovery pedagogy” to help those singers regain normal function. The victims of misguided pedagogies suffer loss of time and money, and, above all, lack of success in their chosen field. It might then be assumed that the answer for the teacher in search of functional information would be to turn to those manuals that purport to justify a particular vocal pedagogy through the application of scientific information. Unfortunately, such a route is not necessarily free of some serious pitfalls. However, this does not mean that the voice teacher is excused from examining the physical aspects of the art of singing.
