(p.92) Chapter 6 On the Road Again 1934–1937

Alyn Shipton

This chapter describes the Paramount movie Cabell Calloway made soon after his return to New York, which was called Jitterbug Party. This film showed Cab's extrovert dancing and singing and included a splendid coda to “Hotcha Razz Ma Tazz,” which was accompanied only by the hand claps of the band. The film also featured the rhythm team in a sequence that artfully captured Harry White's easy swing on guitar and Al Morgan's highly visual style of bass playing, slapping the instrument vigorously while simultaneously holding his bow in his right hand. Irving Mills, having brought the band back from Europe, was now clearly following his policy of seeking more exposure for Cab and his band in film.
