Lincoln in Africa

(p.259) 15 From Colonization to Anti-colonialism
The Global Lincoln

Kevin Gaines

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the image and reception of Abraham Lincoln in Africa. It explains that Africa's embrace of Lincoln was based on his advocacy of colonization or the resettlement of former slaves back to Africa. It discusses the influence of Lincoln on African anti-colonial nationalists' struggle for self-determination and the inspiration he provided for blacks to continue to debate the meaning of their existence in the U.S. This chapter also mentions that Africans enlisted Lincoln as a resource in their opposition to European colonialism from the mid-1880s to the 1960s and investigates how English-speaking Africans learned about Lincoln.
