(p.109) 5 Hominin Physiological Evolution and the Emergence of Musical Capacities
Music, Language, and Human Evolution

Iain Morley

Oxford University Press

This chapter examines the physiological evolution of the hominins and the emergence of their musical capacities. It discusses the physiological, neurological, developmental, and primatalogical evidence for the emergence of musical capabilities, the innate capacities for vocal and rhythmic complexity and the tonal and emotional content of melody and vocalization. It suggests that musical behaviors developed from vocalizations and gestures associated with the expression of emotion and maintenance of social bonds.
