This chapter focuses on the genre of science fiction published in the United States between 1860 and 1920. More specifically, it examines how different categories of science fiction, including narratives of utopia and dystopia, time travel, and hollow earth, respond to America’s new technologies, social unrest, urbanisation, and emerging imperial status during the period. The chapter first looks at works that give narrative expression to future inventions, followed by a discussion on utopian and dystopian novels and hollow earth narratives. It then explores publications dealing with time travel and other worlds, along with the writings of Mark Twain, Jack London, and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
