This chapter examines the growth of magazines in the United States during the period 1880–1920, along with the factors that made magazines less expensive and more available to the general public. It looks at the diversification of magazines into various genres encompassing both the public sphere and the private sphere and covering subject-matter ranging from general interest, politics, and foreign affairs to social issues and reform, labour, law, finance, literary arts, music and drama, farming, religion, and family life as well as science, medicine, and health.
