This chapter traces the evolution of the relationship between India and the United States, from the early years of the Indian republic through to the new millennium. That a fundamental shift has occurred during the past decade is clear and this shift is explored in terms of its motivation and timing, attempting to locate its causes. The analysis rests on a combination of international, regional, and domestic factors that operated jointly to usher in the modern era of India-US relations.
