Aquatic odour dispersal fields

Aquatic odour dispersal fields

opportunities and limits of detection, communication, and navigation

(p.1) Chapter 1 Aquatic odour dispersal fields
Chemical Ecology in Aquatic Systems

Jelle Atema

Oxford University Press

This chapter outlines some considerations necessary in evaluating the role of odour in aquatic ecology. It evaluates the limits of sensory detection and the interaction of multiple senses to navigate an odour source. It assesses where the odour molecules go after they leave the source and how much are needed to be detectable; how a shark's nose accesses odour and how lobster's receptors process information; how animals communicate by odour signals and how they use odour to navigate. It also looks at odour dispersal from the perspective of an aquatic animal encountering the chaotic signals of natural dispersal fields.
