This chapter focuses on infochemical-mediated interactions, in which the chemical nature of the compounds has been at least explained if not identified. It explains that chemical ecology aims at the identification of benefits and costs associated with the release of infochemicals to understand the evolution of a particular infochemical-mediated interaction. It claims that long-range chemical communication requires a volatile cue, while short-distance communication is generally accomplished by less volatile substances. It also states that the evolutionary theory predicts that the alarm cues should be fairly species-specific, as has been demonstrated for invertebrates releasing pheromones from distinct glands.
