This chapter reviews the current knowledge on pheromones of aquatic animals. Pheromones are chemical signals used for communication within a species. It has been found that species from many different animal taxa use pheromones underwater. These include reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, molluscs, rotifers, and polychaetes. The chapter then summarizes the results from species of all the different taxa, focusing on some recurrent themes and mechanisms found across taxa in aquatic pheromone research. It also states that pheromones undergo the same evolutionary selection mechanisms as other communication signals, emphasizing that signalling is adaptive for the signaller, and responding to the signal is adaptive for the receiver.
