This chapter explains the theoretical selective advantage and evolution of the chemical cues' influence on social interactions in groups, establishment of mating pairs, and the relationship between parents and offspring; and the different mechanisms of kin recognition. It shows how common kin-structured associations are in different aquatic taxa. It considers the model organisms to explain the importance of chemical cues for recognition and chemical communication. It shows evidence that shoals, groups, and colonies of aquatic organisms often do not consist of a random mix of conspecifics but rather of more or less related individuals that stay together and colonize the same habitat.
