This chapter provides examples of different modes of predator detection and describes a variety of defence mechanisms in marine and freshwater species that are induced by chemical cues. It highlights the progress that has been made in understanding the cellular, neuronal, and physiological mechanisms that underlie predator detection and defence structure development in a model organism, the crustacean zooplankton Daphnia. It shows that predator detection and identification is crucial for an organism to increase its survival chances. It also states that understanding the mechanisms of predator detection will provide a more detailed insight into the molecular processes of chemical communication.
