This chapter focuses on the ablative absolute, which offers a particular challenge to Latin grammarians of the late antique period. It considers the three earliest discussions of the ablative absolute, which make constant reference to Greek grammar as a conceptual anchor-point and actively use the model of the parts of speech. More specifically, it examines the work of Sacerdos, Diomedes, and Priscian. It also discusses the Prologue to the Wycliffite Bible, which tackles the practical problems of translation posed by the ablative absolute and proposes a recipe for its resolution into English.

Keywords:   grammar, ablative absolute, parts of speech, Sacerdos, Diomedes, Priscian, Wycliffite Bible
