This chapter discusses Summa super Priscianum, a textbook on grammar written by teacher and scholar Petrus Helias around 1140–1150. Based on Priscian's Institutiones grammaticae, Summa super Priscianum is the earliest example of the summa as a pedagogical genre and reflects Petrus Helias's view that grammar is independent from the concerns of logic. Petrus Helias also explores the words (verba) in relation to reality (res), along with the notions of ‘congruence’ and ‘complexive noun’, the parts of speech, and syntax.
