Terentianus Maurus, De litteris and De syllabis, CA. 300
Terentianus Maurus, De litteris and De syllabis, CA. 300
This chapter discusses two treatises by North African poet Terentianus Maurus, who lived sometime between 150 and 350: De litteris and De syllabis. Written in verse form on metrics, De litteris and De syllabis perform several functions, such as assisting memorisation and pedagogy. De litteris concentrates on the pronunciation of the different letters, with emphasis on the consonantic use of the letters I and U. De syllabis, on the other hand, focuses on the qualities and combinatory possibilities of letters in forming syllables as well as the prosodic qualities of the syllable in the dactylic hexameter.
