This chapter discusses Guido Faba's Preface to the Rota nova (New Wheel), written around 1225. Rota nova is a treatise on dictamen that offers practical advice on the faults to be avoided in letter-writing. The preface describes Guido's life and especially his academic and professional career. Rota nova deals with the definitions of dictamen and the letter, as well as salutation and the essential parts of a letter, punctuation (clauses), prose rhythm (the cursus), and syllabification. Examples of salutations are given, and some general advice about signalling the divisions between parts of the letter and about brevity is presented.
