Medieval Grammar and Rhetoric

This chapter discusses Speculum doctrinale, written by Vincent of Beauvais around 1260. Speculum doctrinale, which is part of Speculum maius (‘Greater Mirror’), deals with the sciences through histories of the spiritual and moral purposes for which they were instituted. It also presents various definitions of philosophy ranging from traditional authorities of late antiquity to more recent (mainly twelfth-century) sources. In addition, it offers two ‘modern’ schemes of scientific classification: one by Michael Scot and the other which is potentially representative of the teaching of a Parisian master. Grammar and rhetoric are explored as well.
