This chapter examines George Frideric Handel's career in Italy and Hanover, drawing mainly from accounts of John Mainwaring. In 1706, Handel found himself in Rome performing cantatas in private concerts or ‘academies’ supported by musical patrons, Cardinals Ottoboni, Pamphili, and Colonna, and Marquis Ruspoli. Rome was the location where Handel wrote his first oratorios, Il trionfo del tempo and La resurrezion. The chapter then talks about Handel's move to Florence in 1707 to perform his first opera, Rodrigo, as operas were banned in Rome. Handel started 1708 in Rome mainly under Ruspoli's patronage but due to the ban, he eventually decided to move to Venice, a well-known operatic centre. There, Handel composed Agrippina, a masterpiece that ran for twenty-seven consecutive performances. The chapter concludes by describing Handel's transfer to Hanover in 1710 and serving as the Kapellmeister to Elector George, who would later become King of Great Britain and Ireland.
