What Does Genesis Mean?

What Does Genesis Mean?

(p.159) 26 What Does Genesis Mean?
Among the Creationists

Jason Rosenhouse

Oxford University Press

In this chapter, the author considers the meaning of Genesis. He first examines the interpretation of Genesis by proponents of Young-Earth creationism (YEC) as well as their ideas about hermeneutics. He then discusses the distinction between hermeneutics and biblical exegesis before turning to the Bible as an expression of God's love and the challenges to the YEC interpretation of Genesis. The author argues that for all the genuine problems evolution presents for Christianity, conflicts with the Bible should not be considered among them. He also contends that the modern creationist view was well within the bounds of mainstream thought, to the point of being dominant, for much of Christian history.
