Why I Love Being Jewish

Why I Love Being Jewish

(p.179) 28 Why I Love Being Jewish
Among the Creationists

Jason Rosenhouse

Oxford University Press

In this chapter, the author, who is Jewish, discusses cultural religion. He explains why he loves being Jewish despite his mordant atheism. For example, he loves that Jews like him not only do not proselytize, but they positively discourage conversion. He also loves the part of the Passover seder where Jews express dismay that freedom from bondage came at the cost of so many Egyptian lives. However, he does not believe that God made a covenant with his ancestors in which the Jews agreed to live by certain implausible laws in return for the land of Israel. Lastly, he notes that there is a spectrum of religious belief from atheism and purely cultural religion on one side to fundamentalism on the other, and that he knows where he is on that spectrum.
