This chapter presents oral history interviews with three American nuns who have been involved in activism: Sister Margaret Traxler, a School Sister of Notre Dame who is a staunch advocate of a variety of causes, particularly civil rights and women's causes; Sister Jeannine Gramick, a School Sister of Notre Dame who crossed swords with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church because of her teachings on homosexuality; and Sister Anne Montgomery, a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart who became involved in the peace movement in the late 1970s. The narratives capture the women's experiences over the past fifty years, beginning in the 1960s.
