This chapter introduces County Health Services (CHS) as the only hospital that provides comprehensive care for the urban poor, undereducated, and racially diverse, and as an intellectual stimulating environment for students, interns, and residents as they further their medical knowledge and skills. It describes the public hospital system, from the services it offers to patients to the views of health-care providers in serving the poor throughout the dying process. It provides an overview of the most visited rooms and the hospital to the medical hierarchy prevalent in hospitals.
