This chapter presents V. Subrahmania Iyer's 1955 essay, “Śankara's Philosophy,” in which he interprets Śankara's philosophical views. Iyer was Registrar of the University of Mysore, Diwan of Trivancore, and Court Philosopher and Advisor to the Maharajah of Mysore. He was a modernist, concerned with interpreting Advaita as a doctrine amenable to contemporary philosophy and stripping it of its mystical overtones. In his essay, Iyer analyzes Advaita (non-dualism), as Śankara's system is called, with particular emphasis on the problems of truth and the problem of reality. He comments on Śankara's claim that aside from religious feeling, mystic experiences, and theological dogmas, laws of science rest upon truth and they all reveal but different degrees of it, through which the human mind passes before it attains to the highest or ultimate truth.
