(p.105) 6 Musical Elements
Music Outside the Lines

Maud Hickey

Oxford University Press

This chapter describes the technical principles of music composition. These include not only basic musical elements such as pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture, and density, but also chords and beats. The chapter illustrates some compositional ideas by first discussing the conceptual basis of a number of musical elements. It further argues that there is no music with just one musical element and that “technical” composition activities should be supplemented with varied musical listening. It also states that compositional assignments given to students should be parameter-driven and rule-bound. Some activities are then provided at the end of the chapter.
