This chapter introduces the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in Alaska. It looks into the project's role of understanding and predicting the effects of environmental change on arctic landscapes. It describes the natural, vegetation, and human history of the region of Toolik Lake, Alaska, where research has been undergoing since 1975. It enumerates the advantages of the site for LTER research, and discusses the history and development of research at the Toolik LTER site by recalling past research studies done by other agencies. It also gives an overview of the large-scale experiments done by the Arctic LTER on the region.
